“The Lurking Fear” Sees a Small Resurgence

Lovecraft’s story “The Lurking Fear” has seen some love from two different companies recently. For the unfamiliar “The Lurking Fear” is a story first published in the January through April 1923 issues of Home Brew as a serial. It is about a monster hunter who hears tales of a lurking fear in the Catskills Mountains and takes two men to go investigate. From the story:

There was thunder in the air on the night I went to the deserted mansion atop Tempest Mountain to find the lurking fear. I was not alone, for foolhardiness was not then mixed with that love of the grotesque and the terrible which has made my career a series of quests for strange horrors in literature and in life. With me were two faithful and muscular men for whom I had sent when the time came; men long associated with me in my ghastly explorations because of their peculiar fitness.

The second release, from Cadabra Records, is a limited edition vinyl pressing read by Andrew Leman that is currently on pre-order and limited to 500 copies.

Of course there is always the possibility that one of our readers has never read the original story. If that is the case, then I recommend heading over to hplovecraft.com and reading it online before checking out the movie and vinyl. But do it quickly, who knows when the pre-orders will sell out.

Until next time, stay sane.
