{"id":352,"date":"2011-03-08T12:08:45","date_gmt":"2011-03-08T19:08:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theunspeakableoath.com\/home\/?p=352"},"modified":"2011-03-08T12:08:45","modified_gmt":"2011-03-08T19:08:45","slug":"at-the-mountains-of-madness-movie-update-dead-or-sleeping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/theunspeakableoath.com\/home\/2011\/03\/at-the-mountains-of-madness-movie-update-dead-or-sleeping\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;At the Mountains of Madness&#8217; movie update: Dead or sleeping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rumors have been flying all week about Guillermo del Toro&#8217;s big-budget adaptation of <em>At the Mountains of Madness, <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/reporting\/2011\/02\/07\/110207fa_fact_zalewski\">the movie that he&#8217;s been trying to make his entire career<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>First <a href=\"http:\/\/io9.com\/#!5778135\/del-toros-at-the-mountains-of-madness-starts-filming-in-june\">io9<\/a> scooped everyone with news that it would start shooting in June. Then they unscooped themselves when a Universal producer said it was still in development hell.<\/p>\n<p>Late last night, CriteronCast said they had an email from del Toro himself saying Mountains is not greenlit, but: <a href=\"http:\/\/criterioncast.com\/2011\/03\/07\/guillermo-del-toro-confirms-he-wont-be-heading-to-the-mountains-of-madness\/\">&#8220;The opposite- Dead.&#8221; <\/a><\/p>\n<p>All accounts have del Toro sticking by an &#8220;R&#8221; rating for <em>Mountains<\/em> and a staggering $150 million budget. It would have needed <em>Return of the King<\/em>-size audiences to meet that budget, and no movie with an &#8220;R&#8221; rating has done that kind of business. Even with James Cameron producing\u2014the man who made <em>Avatar<\/em> and <em>Titanic,<\/em> the two top-grossing films of all time\u2014and Tom Cruise in talks as the star, Universal wouldn&#8217;t commit.<\/p>\n<p>The latest rumor has Legendary Pictures pursuing del Toro for a big-budget monster monster flick called <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.deadline.com\/2011\/03\/delays-on-at-the-mountains-of-madness-creates-competition-for-guillermo-del-toros-next-picture-as-legendary-preps-pacific-rim\/\">Pacific Rim<\/a>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>There is some good news for Lovecraft fans, though: We definitely won&#8217;t see the mighty shoggoths <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/reporting\/2011\/02\/07\/110207fa_fact_zalewski?currentPage=13\">undone by salt water<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Just by money.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 586px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.epilogue.net\/cgi\/database\/art\/view.pl?id=58504\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"&quot;Still Guarding the City,&quot; by David Lee Ingersoll\" src=\"http:\/\/images.epilogue.net\/users\/chaosunit\/Shoggoth.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">&quot;Quick!
