It’s no secret that H.P. Lovecraft can be…controversial…when it comes to the representation of women and minorities in his writing; much has been written and discussed on the subject and that isn’t what we’re here to talk about this week. Despite these things it doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy his writing while still having a critical eye, which is why we are excited to show you\u00a0this week; two books that feature women as strong leads that are also written by women.<\/p>\n

Originally published as\u00a0She Walks in Shadows<\/em> by Innsmouth Free Press, this book is a compilation of short stories written by women the world over and also illustrated by women. Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs, Old Ones, Elder Gods, mystery, and adventure all await those who dare read. It can be found at Prime Books<\/a>. \"dream-quest\"<\/a>The Dream-Quest of Vellitt Boe<\/h3>\n

Author Kij Johnson grew up in Iowa, where there exists only corn, soybeans, and farm animals. So when she read the stories of the Dream Cycle series when she was young she was instantly hooked. This novella is the story of a grandmother who goes on a quest through the Dreamlands to find a former student. An interview with the author can be found on Wired<\/a>\u00a0and the book is published by Macmillan<\/a>.<\/p>\n
